Handout of Lily of the Valley on 1st May
On the occasion of the traditional May Day lily-of-the-valley handout, the President of the Republic, Mr Nicolas Sarkozy, received a delegation of company directors and trade representatives from Rungis, led by Mr Marc Spielrein, President of Rungis International Market, at the Palais de l’Elysée.
This ceremony was a first for the head of state and as such it had a special appeal. In his speech, Mr Marc Spielrein talked of the transparency of wholesale food prices and the active internationalization of Rungis Market.
In his reply, President Sarkozy reiterated his attachment to Rungis Market as “a place of values, the first of which hard work,” and said he wished to go there to “salute the France that works.”
The Rungis Market delegation then went to the Hôtel de Ville of Paris where they were received by Mr Bertrand Delanoë. The Mayor of Paris, accompanied by Mrs Lyne Cohen-Solal, deputy mayor in charge of Trade, Crafts, Self-employed and Arts professions, emphasized “the extraordinary luck of having a place of quality, perfection and top performance with Rungis Market”. Regarding the ongoing modernization of Paris, the Mayor of Paris reminded everyone of the need to “adapt traffic and delivery methods in the capital, in a pragmatic, constructive way, and in consultation with Rungis Market”. Lastly, he hoped to come to Rungis in the first quarter of 2009.
