Tribute to Henri Salvador
Henri Salvador died on 13 February 2008. A venerable French songwriter (he gave his farewell concert in December 2007, at the Palais des Congrès, when he was 90!), he composed and performed innumerable hit songs. An outstanding guitarist, he began his career in jazz and played with the greatest jazzmen of the time.
A singer with an exceptional career and a very catching laugh, Henri Salvador was also a faithful friend of Rungis Market. Antoine d’Agostinio (La Cave de Rungis), remembers his “pal” of thirty years. “I met Henri, about thirty years ago, while playing boules together at the Porte de Montreuil. We got on well and our friendship grew over the years. I admire him a lot because he successfully reached all generations. He came to Rungis for the first time on the occasion of the Market’s 25th anniversary. At the time, he had agreed to be a member of the jury for the election of the first Miss Rungis. One year, when he was at the Montreux Festival, he didn’t hesitate to take the plane to come to Rungis to celebrate the beef stew with us. Another time, he was touring in Asia and he took a plane with eleven hours’ time difference to come and join us at Rungis. He loved coming to Rungis and he never missed an appearance, every year, for Beaujolais nouveau. He had a lot of respect for everyone working at Rungis.. He used to come because he loved the atmosphere here, with real, ordinary people, as he put it. He was a friend of Rungis. A real gourmet, he especially liked the good products from Rungis. As a result, he was appointed ‘Gastronomic Ambassador’ of Rungis in November 2003 and he was very proud of that. He was a generous man and he always helped me in my various efforts with Association Lino Ventura. He understood friendship. Henri is unforgettable and he is still with us.”.
