Continuing on from their progression in 2015, the volumes of fruit and vegetables handled at Rungis Market increased a further 4% in 2016 to nearly 1.2 million tonnes. This increase was greater than that achieved at the national market, with household purchases of fruit up 0.4% and vegetables 1.4% (source: Kantar Worldpanel). Incoming deliveries of vegetables to Rungis increased by 2% to nearly 462,000 tonnes and the majority of categories performed well, the most significant including tomatoes (up 3.7% to nearly 90,000 tonnes) and potatoes (up 1.3% to over 92,000 tonnes).

….And one that is driven by fruit sales

The trend has been even more positive where fruit is concerned, with an increase of 6%, reaching 737,300 tonnes. The two leading product categories also experienced growth, with oranges up 5.6% to 64,200 tonnes and bananas up 2% to 138,600 tonnes. There has also been a significant rise in sales of kiwis, avocados and grapes, among other things. Following the various projects that have been undertaken here in previous years, the fruit and vegetable sector continues to grow, notably with the services developed by businesses for their customers, including order preparation and delivery, among others. Last but not least, it is worth highlighting the opening of the Comptoir du Carreau, selling only goods produced in the Île-de-France region, at the centre of the Île-de-France fruit & vegetable producers’ building.
